The solubility of iodine increases because the position of equilibrium has shifted towards the triiodide side of the reaction. Addition of the reactants causes an increase in the product which is directly related to the solubility of iodine in water in this case. 2. Ammonium chloride will be more soluble in hot water as in an endothermic reaction, increasing the temperature (which is the same as adding heat – one of the reactants) will cause the position of equilibrium to shift towards the products to compensate for the change.More products are a result of increased solubility of Ammonium Chloride with water when temperature is increased. CoCl42- ions are present in this solution as they are blue colored and the color of the Cobalt Chloride solution was blue when we recorded the color and appearance of the solution. 2. It is way too distracting for you and the people around you; you miss out on what the teacher is saying and it affects you in the long run. It is clear that sometimes we need to learn to set aside our technology from distracting us.This is because what is going on in front of us is way more important. Causes Of The French Revolution Essay On July 14, 1789 a large mob stormed the Bastille, and killed the commander and some other soldiers. The fall of the Bastille marked the beginning of the French Revolution, and was a symbol to the people of France representing years of abuse by the monarchy. Also, this event served as a wake-up call to King Louis XVI. Unlike any other short protest or riot, this event actually challenge to the regime. As the French Revolution progressed, French society underwent a transformation as feudal, religious, and aristocratic privileges disappeared and the ancien rà ©gime were abruptly overthrown under the fundamental principle of â€Å"Libertà ©, à ©galità ©, fraternità ©Ã¢â‚¬ . Although there are many causes to the French Revolution, the three main ones are: the mismanagement of the economy, the pressure of taxes placed primarily onto the third estate, and the spark from Enlightenment ideas and the American Revolution. These events set a fire in France that could no longer be contained. It spread through France like a wildfire. The first cause to the French Revolution was the mismanagement of the economy. Louis XIV had left France deeply in debt with his extravagant spending. France’s Involvement in the Seven Years’ War and American Revolution put it deeper down the hole. Costs had generally risen during the 1700’s and the lavish court soaked up millions. The government borrowed more and more money to bridge the gap between income and expenses. Years of deficit spending, or spending more than the income, was taking its toll on the country’s treasury. By 1789, half of the country’s income from taxes went to paying the interest on this debt. Louis XVI was forced to raise taxes to pay back the debts, leading to further tension and revolt. The first cause to the French Revolution was the pressure that taxes placed onto the Third Estate, or anyone that wasn’t nobility or clergy. This included the wealthier middle class, or bourgeoisie, and the extremely poor working clas s and rural farmers. While the poor suffered from the agonizing taxes, the rich nobility and clergy didn’t suffer these taxes because of tradition which granted the nobles and clergy freedom from paying taxes. The political crisis of 1789 coincided with the worst famine in memory, and as taxes rose, tension rose. When taxing the First and Second Estates was proposed by the king’s advisor, Jacques Necker, the nobles and high clergy resisted the  attempt to end their exemption from taxes and forced the king to dismiss him. As the crisis deepened, the pressure for reform grew. The wealthy class demanded, however, that the king summon the Estates-General, the legislative body consisting of representatives of the three estates, before making any changes. This event later backfired on the wealthy with the creation of the National Assembly which established many reforms. The last reason to the French Revolution was the spark of Enlightenment ideas and the American Revolution. This spark set fire to the French Revolution and roared across the country. Many people believed in the ideas of â€Å"equality† and â€Å"freedom of the individual† as presented Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot and other philosophers and social theorists of the Enlightenment. They especially favored John Locke’s idea that if a government violates the people’s natural rights, the people have the right to replace that government. These ideas of life, liberty, and equality had contributed to the creation of the American Revolution and the newly formed American government served as a live example of the proper structure of government. Canterbury Tales: Wife of Bath Analysis Prioress and Wife of Bath Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, is a frozen picture of life in the Middle Ages. Chaucer places his characters on a pilgrimage, a religious journey made to a shrine or holy place. They are traveling on horseback from London to the shrine of martyr Saint Thomas a Becket at Canterbury. Chaucer has very opinionated views of the manners and behaviors of women and expresses it strongly in the Tale. In his collection of Tales, he portrays two extremes in his prospect of women. The Wife of Bath represents the extravagant and lusty woman where as the Prioress represents the admirable and devoted follower of church. Chaucer delineates the two characters contrastingly in their appearances, general manners, education and most evidently in their behavior toward men. Two female characters in Canterbury Tales portray themselves differently to what would be expected of their class and status. The Wife of Bath represents â€Å"liberal† extreme in regards to female stereotypes of the Middle Ages. Unlike most women being anonymous during the middle Ages, she has a mind of her own and voices herself. Furthermore, she thinks extremely highly of herself and enjoys showing off her Sunday clothes. Because of her obnoxious attitude, Chaucer makes her toothless, fat and large. The Prioress on the other hand, serves as a foil to the Wife of Bath. Chaucer describes her as a â€Å"tender-hearted† (154) who cannot bear the sight of pain or physical suffering. â€Å"She used to weep if she but saw a mouse caught in a trap, if it were dead or bleeding† (148-9). Chaucer paints a very delicate and elegant picture of the Prioress. Chaucer describes her table manners as very â€Å"graceful, not a drop of anything would fall from her mouth, and she was very polite when talking things at the tale† (131-134). Chaucers last description of Prioress the letter â€Å"A † around her neck that stood for â€Å"Amour vincit omnia† (166) meaning â€Å"Lover Conquers all.† The symbol that she wore showed that she is perfect and obviously a representation of what most men of that time wanted but they couldnt have her. Accordingly, the Wife of Bath is daunting, ostentatious, and ugly. She is nothing in comparison to the Prioress who is elegant, well mannered and above all loving. The Prioresss superiority over the Wife of Bath is shown again in the presence of education. The Wife of Bath has traveled a great deal and seems knowledgeable about things of the world. She brings up many valid points throughout the prologue, but Chaucer voids her opinion because of her social class and looks, when in truth she is actually wise. On the contrary, the Prioress is considered â€Å"scholastic† and high class due to her good manners. Her ability to speak French puts her character in a higher class category. Thus, once again the Prioress is considered intelligent. Wife of Baths action and thinking not only differ from the Prioress, but almost from everyone else in the Middle Ages. The Wife of Bath is radical especially when it comes to relationship with men. She is characterized as knowing much about love, which is illustrated by her physical description being gap-toothed, which symbolizes â€Å"sexual accomplishment.† Its interesting how the Wife of Bath is always striving to have sovereignty and the Prioress was granted sovereignty even though she didnt seek for it intentionally. The Wife of Bath and the Prioress alike have power over men once again this characterization would scare men. The Prioress, as her name suggests is a â€Å"superior being in a monastic community for women† is so important that â€Å"three priests were in her company† (168); as this shows her status as the boss, which would be fearful for men at that time. Early in the tale, there is a quotation by the Wife of Bath supporting the idea of mens fear. â€Å"I dont deny that I will have my husbands both my debtor and my slave, and as long as I am his wife he shall suffer in the flesh. I will have command over his body during all of his life, not he.† In other words she is saying that she will have total control over herself, her husband, and their household. Wife of Bath has a choice of not giving in to the man, but she decides to let the man have pleasure for his desire not hers. Because from her past experience, she knows how much men enjoy when women are submissive . Ironically, â€Å"She (Prioress) was all sentiment† (154), this is shown through her use of the Jew as the villain of her tale. However, there is no historical evidence of ritual murder of Christian children by Jews, but that would have not mattered to the pilgrims. This tale also reinforces her devotion to the church and this characterization can be seen as a fear to some men as they are unable to obtain her. This is the only time we see that Chaucer is telling us that the Prioress is not as perfect as she might have first seemed. She is basically a fake. A Prioress should take care of people but instead in Canterbury Tales, â€Å"she had little dogs,† (150) which was against the rules of the Church. She also loved to show off her dress, which is not something a nun would do. Chaucer now contrasts feelings in the Prioress with senses of the Wife of Bath. Prioress embodies fastidious sensibility. The Wife of Bath is the pole of elemental vitality. Prioress is â€Å"simple and coy† (123) and she never curses. However, she subtly violates the laws of her order by keeping pets, overdressing and taking on to a pilgrimage. On the other hand, Wife of Baths aggressiveness demonstrates of her instincts, appetites and will. She makes the institutions of Church: pilgrimage and marriage serve to her temperament. Chaucer developed two basic traits of her; Experience and desire for mastery. Its interesting to know that how Chaucer manipulates the mode of medieval romance with Prioress physically resembling a romance heroine, and the Wife of Bath is used in a romantic setting in Canterbury Tales. Both ways of using romance are connected with irony. Religious issues bring up another interesting contrast between the Wife of Bath and Prioress. Wife of Bath embodies empirical knowledge of facts; the Prioress embodies blind religious faith. Chaucer is trying to educate women through these tales, and say that there are times that one should be a feminist and times one should be not. In his compare and contrast, he shows in both women what men fear. Wife of Bath is excessively sex appealing, and the Prioress is generally filled with feelings. As we all know by now, that both of the womans are not what they seem to be, but they are the opposite of their class and status.

Analysis of Dickinson’s Pain has an Element of Blank      Although cryptic in language and structure, Dickinson gives her work an instinctually vivid sense of emotion.   Her examination of the feeling of pain focuses in on only a few of the subtler nuances of pain that are integral parts of the experience.   She draws in on an "Element of Blank" that she introduces in her opening line.   In exploring pain, she proposes that this "blankness" is a self-propagating force that is subject to the dynamic forces of time, history and perception, but only to an extent. Her first mention of "Pain" in the first line does not distinguish this particular emotion as being of a particular brand of pain.   She substitutes no other words for "pain."   By suggesting no other words for "pain," she chooses the most semantically encompassing term for the emotion.   She thus gives her work the responsibility of examining the collective, general breadth of "pain."   Her alternatives offer connotations that color her usage of "Pain": the sense of loss in "grief" and "mourning" or the sense of pity in "anguish" and "suffering."   She chooses the lexical vagueness of "Pain" to embrace all these facets of the emotion.    In introducing the "Element of Blank," it becomes the context that she thus examines pain.   The exact context of "Blank" possesses a vagueness that suggests its own inadequacy of solid definition.   Perhaps this sense of indefinition is the impression that this usage of "Blank" is meant to inspire.   In this context, this "blankness" is suggestive of a quality of empty unknowingness that is supported by the next few lines: "It cannot recollect When it begun."   This inability to remember raises a major problem with respect to the nature of "Pain;" namely whether Dickinson is choosing to personify "Pain" by giving it a human quality like memory, or is in fact negating the humanity of making it unable to remember.   Several lines below, she suggests that "Pain" does in fact possess some sort of limited sentient ability in recognizing "Its Past - enlightened to perceive."   It is very possible that it is the "Pain" that is being enlightened or perceiving. These conscious acts of giving "Pain" some sort of capacity of awareness personify "Pain" to some extent.    In continuation of "Pain's" inability to remember, She proceeds, "It cannot recollect When it begun - or if there were A time when it was not.

English GCSE Coursework – Pre1914 Poetry How does Hardy portray the themes of loss and loneliness in his poems? I am going to be comparing three of Thomas Hardy’s poems. These poems are: Where The Picnic Was, The Voice and Neutral Tones. Hardy was writing in a time when women could not vote. Women were second-class citizens who mainly stayed in the home. During the time when Hardy was writing, it was very difficult for a woman to divorce a man. The only way the woman would be able to divorce the man was only if she could prove cruelty. However, unlike women, a man could divorce his wife just like that with a minor reason. Thomas Hardy himself believed in marriage but only if people had similar interests. If people grew apart, he believed that they should be allowed to divorce. Hardy married twice in his lifetime. In 1874, Hardy married Emma Lavinia Gifford. She convinced him to start writing. Emma Hardy could not have children but still, Hardy continued the marriage without divorcing. On November 27th 1912, Emma Hardy died after being married for 38 years. Two years later, Hardy married his secretary, Florence Emily Dugdale. She was 35 and he was 74. She acted as his companion and housekeeper. The poems I have chosen to compare were all written after Emma’s death. Where The Picnic Was is basically talking about a picnic he had been on with Emma. He explains how it was in a secluded area were hardly anyone went. The title suggests happy as you normally go for a picnic in summer or spring, it also suggests that he went with someone like family or someone he was in love with, it mainly suggests love, but it also suggest looking back because of the ‘was’ in the title. All the poems do not contain the same content but overall relate to the death of Emma and looking back at good times. The mood of this poem changes as it goes on. In the first verse of the poem, it is a happy mood, but gradually the mood changes in verse 2 and in verse 3, the mood is oriented on the death of Emma and less on natural setting. Happiness in the first verse is shown in this quote. ‘In the summer time’. The sadness in the third verse is shown in this quote, ‘Where no picnics are, And one – has shut her eyes’. College Sports: Paying Division One Athletes A huge debate has been on the rise lately relating to why division one athletes should get paid on top of obtaining a scholarship. The proposal states that athletes should be eligible to receive money based on a percentage of profit their school makes. Although some say division one athletes already have all of their needs taken care of, helping athletes with extra expenses in college is essential. Because full ride scholarships take care of most costs for athletes, many argue they already have school paid for, and extra money isn’t necessary. On the other hand, athletes spend so much time and effort in their specific sport they don’t have time to earn extra money, which establishes the need for money from their school. Either way, the decision to pass a law of this magnitude is still up in the air. Athletic scholarships are a great way to receive a free education and many people believe that school is the only thing it should pay for. There are many reasons as to why individuals argue this. One consequence of passing a law relating to student-athletes receiving money may be possibly corrupting the NCAA system. Because the argument is based on how much the sport makes for the school, gambling and shaving points may occur more frequently in intercollegiate athletics. Shaving points is a method people use to pay off players if they miss shots on purpose in order to lose. Already a huge problem, this suggests athletes might have easier access to money and would affect their play. Another reason that athletes should not get paid is because they aren’t professionals yet. In my experiences as a student athlete, I can vouch for those in favor of paying student athletes. Because I need more money to help me through college, I had to apply for financial aid and eventually received a grant. These expenses range from shampoo to eating out when the cafeteria is closed. The amount of time I spend as an athlete each week takes up at least 20 hours. The combination of time spent for basketball and personal needs demonstrates why student athletes should receive money. I’m amazed at how many things require money from my own pocket. The bottom line is student athletes need to start getting paid even if it’s minimal.

The planet Earth could be defined as one small piece to an extremely large puzzle within our Galaxy. With out, the Galaxy would not function in the same way as it does now. Inside our planet are several different resources that are used every day. Whether this is direct use such as drilling for oil, or indirect use such as over grazing our land to feed the animals that will in turn feed humans, the point is the Earth is feeling the effects of it. Some argue that we will never run out of resources, at least not in our lifetime; others believe that we are overusing resources and through this we are minimizing our chances of survival in the future. We either live for the here and now and use what was given to us, or we conserve in hopes of bettering the lives of the future generations. Either way, the choice is ours to make. Let us first take into consideration our â€Å"Land†, this is what most people will spend the majority of their lives living on as well as surrounded by, day to day. As we look back before the Industrial Revolution Era, we can see that the resources that are provided around us are used sparsely. As the manufacturing of new products arise and new ideas are being formed each day, the need for resources increases dramatically. According to the Earth Observatory of NASA, the single biggest direct cause of tropical deforestation is conversion to cropland and pasture, mostly for subsistence, which is growing crops or raising livestock to meet daily needs. In addition, land is being taken over for personal, business, and recreational use (NASA). With the need for agriculture resources rising, more and more of the available land is being occupied. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. As the number of people that are, using agriculture for survival is rapidly increasing, the faster we are using all available resources. With half of the world’s forests gone already, our species would stand little chance surviving through deforestation. We would be left with filthy air, chronic drought, and especially no tree based products such as paper, barrels, benches, musical instruments, pine oil, furniture, billboards, fuel wood, charcoal, spices, egg cartons, linoleum, luggage, tires, bark, fiber, dyes,n  incense, latexes, oils, resins, shellac, tanning compounds, waxes, and many more (Wiscombe, Warren). Human population is one more factor to consider. In the last 200 years, our population has increased from 1 Billion in the year 1800 to 7 Billion in the year 2012. With numbers rising as rapidly as they are, the human population will continue to over consume available natural resources (Hopkins, James). Starting in the early 1900’s when the consumer goods industry skyrocketed many items made from fossil fuels began to be mass-produced. The production of these items has not decreased nor are they on track to decreasing production. Many common products are made from fossil fuels. An example of these would be household items, office supplies, sports equipment and supplies, beauty products, automotive parts and supplies and building material. The U.S. Energy and Information Administration found that the United States consumed a total of 6.87 billion barrels (18.83 million barrels per day) in 2011 and 7.0 billion barrels (19.18 million barrels per day) of refined petroleum products and biofuels in 2010. According to the Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) it is predicted that 3.74 trillion barrels of oil remained in the Earth in 2006, three times that estimated by peak oil proponents. CERA predicted that global oil production would hit a decades-long â€Å"undulating plateau† around the middle of the 21st century (Lamb, Robert). The fact is that we could run out of oil eventually. When most of us think of fishing, we think of fun recreational time with friends and family, or possibly even fishing to catch a great source of nutrition for dinner that night. How often do we stop and think about the people that fish to provide the rest of the world with the supply of fish that is in demand. With many fisheries closing down due to poor managing and depletion, anglers are turning to the deep sea to fill their â€Å"fish orders†. Large fishing vessels also known as Super Trawlers are dragging fishing nets up to a mile deep. Doing this allows them to catch as many fish as possible, but it is also destroying natural habitat such as coral reefs that have been part of the sea for thousands of years. The effect of this is devastating to sea life. Many breeds of fish are being captured at a faster rate than they can reproduce. Some species such as orange roughy fishing became popular in New Zealand in the 1970’s. Over time, it spread to many countries around the world. In the last 20 years, there has been a decline in catch up to 75%. It is no longer common to see  in grocery stores as well as restaurants. The amounts of fish that are captu  red and distributed around the world are alarming opposed to the rate the fish can multiply. Along with the deep seas, there are signs of rising sea levels. This is being contributed to the melting of Glaciers. According to National Geographic’s â€Å"The famed snows of Kilimanjaro have melted more than 80 percent since 1912. Glaciers in the Garhwal Himalaya in India are retreating so fast that researchers believe that most central and eastern Himalayan glaciers could virtually disappear by 2035. Arctic sea ice has thinned significantly over the past half century, and its extent has declined by about 10 percent in the past 30 years†. Because of the warming temperatures, the ice is melting at a rate between four and eight inches in the last century. If all of Greenland and Antarctica were to melt, the ocean would rise 200 feet. This is possible because of the massive amount of water each glacier holds. Glaciers have been measured at 300 feet above water this is not including that 90% of the glacier is underwater. The outcome of a dramatic rise in sea level would affect millions of people in many different countries by washing away large parts of our land as well as damaging thousands of cities (Glick, Daniel). With the earth’s temperature rising and glaciers disappearing at an unprecedented rate, the valuable fresh water is simply running into the sea. Only 2.5 percent of all water on the planet is fresh, and 70 percent of this is locked up in glaciers and permanent snow. Currently, more than 2.3 billion people in 21 countries live in areas, which are classified as ‘water stressed’ while a further 1.7 billion live in areas of scarcity. More than one billion people have little access to clean water. The International Water Management Institute assessed that 64 per cent of the world’s population will live in ‘water stressed’ areas by 2025. In addition, it is estimated that one-third of the world’s population will live in areas of ‘absolute water scarcity’. These include Pakistan, South Africa and large parts of China and India (Wardle, Tony). Every aspect that we look at has a domino effect on all other aspects. The more people populate the Earth the more land will be needed to house them, the more houses are built the more forests and metals will be used. More fossil fuel will be mined in order to continue running and manufacturing equipment to run machinery to get the houses built. The more agriculture will be needed to feed the population, the more land that is used to breed animals for human  consumption, the more wild animals will be driven out of their habitats. Very few of the people living today have experienced what life was like 100 plus years ago. Most of us try to relate through videos, photos and songs. Unfortunately, the reality is we will only know life as it is throughout our own lives. We will never fully understand what it was like to go out and hunt for dinner, or not talk to family or friends for extended periods of time because of the lack of communication devices. The world we have created from the resources that have been provided to us is incredible. I would assume people born before the 1900’s could not even dream of the availableness of the amenities that we have nowadays. As we are learning how to use our resources more effectively, we are also mastering the art of recycling resources so they can be used over and over again. An example of this would be agriculture. Because we have learned how to cultivate land, we are able to reuse land in order to produce large amounts of food to supply to many different locations to feed millions of people. According to Kristen Derms, agriculture allows us to better appreciate why agriculture is regarded as a cultural breakthrough. Fundamentally, agriculture ensured the availability and predictability of food. Humanity learned the value of self-sufficiency. We are no longer at the mercy of nature’s randomness our ancestors realized that they had the knowledge and skill to control their own food supply (Dems, Kristina). Fossil fuel is what makes our world run the way that it does. Without using the amounts of fossil fuel that we do, it would be virtually impossible to stay up on all of the consumer products that are in demand. Fossil fuel is particularly easy to find. Once it is found and drilled, it has to capacity to generate huge amounts of energy to various locations. Power plants that use Gas and Coals are very cost efficient. This in turn, makes it possible to get the most possible production out of the least amount of resources (Fossil Fuels). Mining of fossil fuels provides employment to millions of people across the earth each year. The extraction and distribution process is simple, because of this crude oils can be used and converted for practical uses. Individuals around the world depend on fossil fuels to continue their way of life (Mukherjee, Bidisha). In addition to growing the technology and structures of our day-to-day existence, one thing that all humans have to face is coming to the end of our life cycle. Although some live much longer than  others, it is all part of the circle of life. Humans surround themselves with warnings about what to do and what not to do to prolong the survival rate. One of the many things that are mentioned to promote health is to consume Omega-3 fatty acid at least three times a week. According to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research â€Å"Fish contain unsaturated fatty acids, which, when substituted for saturated fatty acids such as those in meat, may lower your cholesterol. The main beneficial nutrient appears to be omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish. Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acid that’s thought to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation in the body can damage your blood vessels and lead to heart disease.† Unhealthy fatty acids are found in most fresh water fish; therefore, the need for salt-water fish is much greater than fresh water fish. In 2005, the commercial fishing industry also provides jobs for approximately 2,000 people bringing in revenue of $362 million dollars (British Columbia). In many parts of the world, the need for fresh water is increasing. Just like the Omega-3 fatty acids, we need fresh water in order to remain healthy. Approximately 2/3 of our body is made up of water. Our bodies need fresh water in order to transport nutrients and oxygen into cells, moisturize the air in the lungs, regulate body temperature, detoxify, and protect and moisturize our joints (Natural Remedies). If we deprive our bodies of the water that is needed the results would be harmful if not fatal. If we were to cut back on water that we used for irrigating our crops, the food that the crops are producing would not have the nourishment in them that we need to survive. Fresh water is the base of our existence so would it not be wise to use what we need in order to survive? If we spend our lives conserving all our resources for the future generation, would we not be depriving ourselves of life? If life does not continue in a healthy, organized manner would it be worth living? Everything we use today is to maintain our survival. We use wood to make houses to shelter and protect us from outside elements. We use fossil fuels to get to and from work, build buildings, heat our homes etc. If our generation does not survive there would be no future generations regardless of how many resources we have reserved. Humans have survived this long using the resources that are given to us. With the 200,000 years that humans have been on Earth, would it be safe to assume we will continue survival at the same rate we have been? Or  do we need to reevaluate how we are treating the resources our land has provided for us. Either way some will argue that we will never run out of resources, at least not in our lifetime; others will continue to believe that we are overusing resources and through this we are minimizing our chances of survival in the future. Elements of Americas market economy in a global setting Essay

Mankiw (2006) characterize a market economy as an economic system where the production and distribution of goods and services through free markets and price systems (p. 7). The amounts of products produced are not pre-determined. At the same time, the amount of goods that will be used is not restricted but bound by market forces. Thus, producers and consumers through the interaction of supply and demand create the market by which products and services are consumed and used. The U.  S. is considered as the icon of this market system which is primarily based on Adam Smith’s capitalism (Rothbard, 2004). To fully understand the mechanism of a market economy, an understanding of its key elements is essential. Some of the key elements that will be discussed through this paper are property rights, competition, and profit. To facilitate this task, discussions will be based on the context of the U. S. market economy. The first element for discussion is property rights. Under the U. S. Constitution, property rights provide the owners of a real, personal or intellectual to exercise ownership, control and sovereignty over their proper (pp. 166-170). Thus, owners are able to utilize the property as they want to, use to gain benefit and protect it from harm. They have the right to benefit from it or from its use. The only constraint with the practice of these rights is that they should contravene any law or inhibit the rights of others (Mankiw, 2006). Competition is described to be the rivalry of individuals or parties because of common or dependent interest (p. 699). In a free market, Rothbard (2004) suggests that competition is the means by which markets determine which suppliers are best to meet demands. Similar to theories on evolution, the process of competition is a means to ensure quality. Thus, competition ensures that consumers are able to get the best product available. However, Rothbard also points out that competition is also a means of controlling the market internally or externally (p. 12-113). Profit is considered the ultimate goal of any economic enterprise. From an economic perspective, profits can be realized when revenues exceed the total cost of inputs (Mankiw, 2006, pp. 271-272). It is achieved when consumers have the capacity to buy a product at more than cost of suppliers’ production. In a simplistic model, profit is what is gained from using various economic resources. Thus, suppliers will continue to want to produce the product because of the economic incentive of its consumption.

Even ancient inventions such as the wheel or the discovery of fire have propelled humans forward, enabling them to build tremendous, continuously developing infrastructures throughout the world. With these ever-developing infrastructures in place, the rapidity of movement and communication has been constantly increasing. They have effectively shortened the time it takes to cross a certain distance. Time and space are the main factors of being; our movements, daily routines and interactions are entirely based around them. However, with technologies ranging from telegraphic communication to the internet and the mobile phone, time is, in some aspects of social live, not only being shortened but is becoming detached from space itself causing us to reconsider how time and space are actually related to each othe r. The concepts and parameters of time and space are particularly hard to define due to their complexity as Harvey (1989: p.203) states: â€Å"the objective qualities of physical time-space cannot be understood, therefore independently of the qualities of material processes.† We have learned to measure them and therefore have given them a basic characterization, so that there is a certain logical feeling to time and space, a sense of passive control. Without matter, time and space have no importance. Modern existence has revolved around understanding and ultimately decreasing time in order to shorten space. Due to mobility inventions starting with the horse cart and ending with the jet plane, the space we move backwards and forwards in has become compressed, while the measurements of space itself has not changed. Time was until the invention of the clock, hard to pin down. Obviously individuals were able to make out periods of a day (morning, midday, night), but there were no pro per time periods, no sense of timely organization. With the clock, society became more structured. Employees were allocated work hours, social meetings could be allocated to a specific hour in the day and a clear timely division between work time and recreational time was put in place. During the industrialisation and even nowadays, this time control has put an exact time structure for allocated movements in an allocated space. It allowed bureaucratic systems to emerge, with which control and structure was implemented into social live. The clocks effect is immense, possibly just like the internet is having an effect on society in post modern society. Space on the other hand is more straightforward for individuals to perceive. Harvey describes space in a social context as â€Å"‘stations (places where certain activities like working, shopping etc. occur) and ‘domains where certain social interactions prevail† (Harvey, 1989: p.211) However, defining space as station s and domains, could also be seen as an oversimplification of space itself. This definition, as Harvey even states himself â€Å"makes no attempt to understand why certain social relations dominate others, or how meaning gets assigned to places, spaces, history, and time.† (Harvey, 1989: p. 212) This simplification and Harveys contradiction to it, shows that there is more to space than just simple stations or domains. Space is not necessarily easily definable. Space and our perception of it are under constant fluctuation, causing us to observe different spaces different. There are private spaces, public spaces, restricted spaces, spaces controlled by a specific group of people. Time and space are intertwined with our social actions and social statuses. There are two important theories of how time and space relations are changing throughout modernity and post modernity; Giddenss time-space distanciation and Harveys idea of time-space compression. Giddens refers to a development â€Å"which tears space away from place by fostering relations between ‘absent others, locationally distant from any given situation of face-to-face interaction† (Giddens 1990, 18) as well as â€Å"lifting out of social relationships from local contexts of interaction and their restructuring across time and space† (Giddens 1990, 21). Giddens calls this disembedding. This means that time and space distance themselves from each other, furthermore we ourselves are lifted out of time and space in a social and communicative context. The need for a physical space to communicate is becoming less central. Harveys idea of time-space compression on the other hand touches upon the fact that with a globalising world, individuals who live in very dista nt places are able to experience the same things at the same time. In essence, this means that they live in the same space, having the same experiences during the same time period. Harvey thus points out that due to our constant development of new communication technologies; the space we move around in and the way we communicate, becomes compressed because we are able to cover the same distance in less time or in no time at all. Both of these two theories about rethinking time-space relations state the fact that information and communication technological advances are central to creating a world that in all places is synchronized. However, a completely electronically synchronised world is far from becoming an actual reality. How can time and space be understood in a postmodern era, where due to new media technologies time and space have changed? As stated earlier, communication changed due to the emergence of immediate communication. The telegraph has changed the idea and concepts of real time. There no longer was the need for oral communication in the same space, and written communication was replaced by the immediate communication technologies. Written communication, took long periods of time to move from sender to recipient, while the telegraph was able to overcome these time ‘gaps. Capitalism, with its need for ‘speeding up time to thus reducing space to increase production and consumption, media technologies, such as the telephone, television, the mobile phone and ultimately the internet have all caused the diminishment and perception of space further than the telegraph, and increased production and consumption due to its increased outreach without the hindrance of space. Space, as state d before plays an integral role in shaping society, and with it constantly being challenged by new emerging media and technologies, the way we see space changes. In a modern capitalist society, companies, who at first were only capable of reaching people in a confined space, are able to advertise and reach targeted consumers globally. A perfect example of a diminishing space rift is Coca Cola. Due to a globalising world, and the achievement of immediate worldwide communication, they were able to market their product worldwide, produce it worldwide. We no longer perceive a person that lives halfway across the globe unreachable. We are able to communicate with them instantly with the new media mediums being put to use. A good example of this are the call centres based in India, who do not actually cater to the Indian public, but to the British, who often are not even aware of the fact that they are making a call across the globe. This is evidently a space and time reduction. â€Å"Sp ace appears to shrink to a ‘global village of telecommunications and a ‘spaceship earth of economic and ecological interdependencies† (Harvey, 1989: p.240) The more technological advances occur, the more are needed, thus the rate at which they are researched and put to use gradually increases, which also in turn causes time to speed up at the same rate. The capitalistic need of ‘instant noodle products constantly advances. Ultimately the internet, since its emergence has become an extension of our space, and a shortcut through time. The internet has replaced post mail, bulletin boards, shopping catalogues, libraries, video rentals, etc. It has not only replaced all these, it has reduced the time needed to access them and use them. Modern communication has become time based rather than space based. With mobile phones, instant messaging and social networking sites, we no longer have the need for space for communication. Our communication has made space, in a social context, physically redundant. In premodern society on the other hand, the need for space was vital for communication, due to the lack of communication technologies. Space and time in that case were equally important. Here it must be understood, that space itself is a hurdle that has to be overcome in order for human interaction to take place. Surveillance and new media technologies are closely interlinked. This idea touches upon Foucaults panopticon, where prisoners, workers, schoolchildren etc. are able to be watched and surveyed from a single point. The idea of this social control has taken a new turn. Society can now be under constant observance, CCTVs and other monitoring devices can be installed anywhere in a country or even abroad, and can be immediately be viewed hundreds of kilometres away. The internet, as well as other electronic media, changes our social surroundings. We no longer have to meet a friend, colleague or family member in a physical space; due to the internet we have the ability to not change our spatial location, but can simply contact them via social networking sites, instant messaging software or other internet or telecommunication based means. Furthermore, touching upon capitalism again, in reference to the internet, consumption is changing. The internet enables us to shop, without moving further than our doorstep to pick up a parcel delivery. We can order any item imaginable, ranging from groceries to electronics to cars to land. We can buy them directly from retailers or take part in auctions on eBay. Giddens asks the question â€Å"Why is the separation of time and space so crucial to the extreme dynamism of modernity?†(Giddens, 1990: p.20) Giddens then proceeds to answer the question and argues that the separation of time and space is the â€Å"prime condition of disembedding† (Giddens, 1990:p.20). Disembedding is not only the removal of individuals from the boundaries of time and space, but also the disembedding of entire institutions. This shows that time-space distanciation happens on a much larger scale. It is not only the communication between single individuals, but the communication of entire companies, institutions, and even entire countries. The disembedding that Giddens mentions, is the product of new media technologies. Furthermore, this affects the basis of contemporary social life. The societies we live in nowadays are highly globalised. This is not only due to the fact that people of different origins live in the same country, but that people can by t he click of a button, order products, programs, or receive information on and from any other country. The relations between time and space, has definitely changed with every communicative technology. Due to new media technologies such as the internet and the mobile phone, we are now able to communicate without having to be in a designated space. We can be in the most public of places, yet be able to talk to someone that was not even in that area. The internet allows us to receive information, communicate with literally anyone instantly, no matter where they are without having to be physically present. It has enabled the emergence of multinational corporations, the intertwining of cultures. Time and spaces relation however, has always been under constant change and will continue to change with every technological advancement we make.
